Having recently led an HR integration of a merger of law firms, I found this particular area to be the most rewarding. The integration opened up space to do things that had not been done previously, such as “Stat Interviews”. For those who are unfamiliar, Stay Interviews usually consist of 5 open-ended questions that are intended to provide insights into why the employee stays with the firm and under what conditions they would consider leaving. Although some employees were apprehensive at first, they warmed up to the conversation and provided some great insights that helped bring the overall level of HR service to new heights. Simple questions like, “Why do you stay here?”, “What do you love most about your job?”, “Have you ever considered leaving and why?” elicited surprisingly candid and interesting feedback and also helped the employee better define their own motivations for their role/work. I really enjoyed the process and highly recommend it.

that is really smart questions to know what motivates your employees to stay in the firm. Moreover, in HR integration you would also need to focus on the compensation & development because both of them contribute to retain the employees

Absolutely, that’s why we created Total Compensation letters for all the employees showing them what the company’s total investment was in them. There were also questions on the stay interview related to where they wanted to go with their career. Thanks for your feedback!
