In 2022, I decided to formalize my M&A experience and memorialize my expertise with either an advanced degree or certification. I recently completed my IM&A (in-person) and M&AP (online) certifications. Both experiences were incredibly rewarding. The instructors had the depth of knowledge and personal experience you’d expect. The class was full of high-caliber, whip-smart, and friendly people. I learned from everyone. What I appreciated most about IMAA and the instructors (both in person and online) was often repeated notes of humility and ethics. I’d recommend attending the in-person course if possible but both were valuable.
I had the privilege of taking the IM&A and Financial Modeling and Business Valuation Course with Trainer Rohit Pratap in an online format. Even though the course was conducted completely virtually, Rohit did an exceptional job of keeping students engaged and explaining complex integration, merger, acquisitions, and financial concepts in a clear, understandable way.

As a part of my MBA program, I enrolled in the Entrepreneurial Finance course. The assessment process required a role-play exercise in which my group represented the buy-side while the target group represented the sell-side in the acquisition of a company. This novel and challenging process made me curious about the overall concept of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and its complete scope. In my research, IMAA was featured many times, and I enrolled in the program. After completing two courses, I can attest that every experience has provided me with new perspectives on how to approach deals and a shift in my understanding of stakeholder engagement/management. When I was searching for training in M&A, the Institute for Mergers, Acquisitions and Alliance (IMAA) was first on the list of training providers. The Legal Mergers and Acquisition course was an easy choice as it brings a deep and solid foundation of all the legal and regulatory aspects of the M&A deal. The virtual live format was structured to help busy professionals gain quality education from experts in the field. The sessions were very engaging and impactful. Hearing and learning from the personal experiences of the lecturers solidified that I made the right choice in choosing IMAA. The LM&A certificate gave me insight into identifying and managing the complexities of the M&A process.
I decided to take the valuation training because I wanted to expand my knowledge in this matter, and to reintroduce myself into the world of M&A, since I had been doing consulting mainly in strategic planning and financial analysis. To accomplish this, I trusted the combination of the Institute for Mergers, Acquisitions and Alliances (IMAA) and Prof. Aswath Damodaran, known as the “Dean of Valuation”. The virtual classroom format was appropriate, since it allowed me to receive the knowledge of and carry out live interactions with prof. Damodaran, without having to travel and from the comfort of my home. After the live sessions, I was able to review the recorded classes. Definitively, I do recommend this training to any professional who wants to expand their knowledge of valuations. In the course, I learned the following: 1) valuations should be simple; 2) valuations should follow a narrative; and 3) try to eliminate biases and preconceptions when making assumptions in valuations.
I participated in Prof. Aswath Damodoran’s valuation training in May 2023. The course was a practical deep dive into various valuation methods and a breath of fresh air, addressing a range of topics from what makes up a good valuation (e.g. narrative AND numbers), the key drivers of value (e.g. cash flows, growth, risk) and how the internet age as defined by zero distribution/marginal costs has changed the way we need to look at valuing companies in the modern world. Prof. Damodaran’s engaging teaching style, iconoclastic perspectives, and hands-on learning made this week-long training an entertaining and can’t miss seminar. Overall, the course was an enriching experience that stepped outside of classroom theories, zeroing-in on real-world valuation scenarios from early stage private ventures to mature, Fortune 500 public companies undergoing digital transformation. If you’re new to valuation and looking to develop your own framework, open to challenging conventional wisdom, or are simply interested in how Prof. Damodoran cooks up engaging content that adds spice to important topics in corporate finance, his materials extend well beyond the conventional training program and would highly recommend to others looking for the same.

The M&AP and IM&A online, self-paced courses allowed me to balance my professional commitments with my desire to expand my knowledge in mergers and acquisitions. While I found the course content comprehensive and up-to-date, there were occasional challenges with the user interface, particularly in tracking progress and navigation across different device platforms. The convenience of online learning and the accessibility of course materials from anywhere were definite strengths of the programs, however.
In general, IMAA’s M&AP and IM&A certification programs provide valuable knowledge and flexibility for professionals seeking to excel in mergers and acquisitions. Despite some interface challenges, the content and support offered by IMAA make these certifications a worthwhile investment in one’s career. The learning journey towards the International Mergers & Acquisitions (IM&A) Expert and Certified Post-Mergers Integration (CPMI) Expert in July and August 2022 has been inspirational and rewarding.
My decision to commit to this high value professional certification were on several decision consideration. First, the international professional standing and purpose of the Institute for Mergers, Acquisitions, and Alliances (IMAA). Second, the need for professional best practices and networking to further strengthen my prior experiences with M&As in excess of US$88 billion within the energy, pharmaceuticals, life sciences and medical devices from 2011 to 2018. Third, the well-resourced learning platform which ranges from virtual to face-to-face curated for learners enable learners to benefit from a good balance between theories, practices and integrated strategic, financial, socio-cultural perspectives.
Overall, the knowledge and skills ensured business and functional leaders to leverage on pragmatic principles to address the pre and post integration process through robust consideration on relevant financial and valuation formula(s). I would recommend the IM&A, CPMI and other related functional due diligence domain areas and valuation certifications to industry leaders who aspire to contribute effectively in the M&A process in multiple industry sectors. It is my opinion that any forward-looking organization(s) with the fortune to attract professional experts who graduated from IMAA will henceforth be well compensated for so doing.
As a CFO and Project Manager professional with some M&A experience in the corporate banking and Bio-Pharmaceutical industries, I wanted to expand my knowledge as I further develop my own corporate financial advisory in the global markets. Rohit is an expert in corporate finance, business valuation and financial modelling. I attended the IM&A programme and Rohit brought us through the business component of the programme. His teaching approach is based on extensive technical knowledge and practical experience. Having knowledge about the core concepts is crucial but knowing how to apply them is more important than that. Rohit brought us through the valuation concepts and going through the practical aspects on the computation to value a business in an M&A exercise. I also had the opportunity to attend Rohit’s financial modelling online class. Apart from the tools to applying the theoretical knowledge to practical case studies, Rohit, being an expert in financial modelling, highlighted various areas of potential pitfalls, and shared practical tips in preparing better and clearer financial models.
The M&A programs I participated in at the IMAA were outstanding. The topics covered were diverse and universally valuable. I took the program as I wanted to fill a gap in my skill set on the way to becoming a CFO. The live virtual classroom format was very easy and allowed for flexibility and a more diverse group of classmates. The program was thorough, and the presenters provided comprehensive information and resources. There was enough time for Q&A and interaction. The e-book library is also a great resource.
Before my CPMI certification, I participated in several integration efforts; however, the process didn’t feel very well organized, and I participated without fully understanding the drivers of the acquisition. I felt like a better structure or roadmap had to exist to merge two companies more efficiently. The CPMI training has equipped me with the framework to effectively implement an integration plan. The instructors at IMAA are practitioners with real world experience who can relate to the variety of issues surrounding post-merger integration efforts.
