No two systems are the same, and each integration presents its own set of challenges—data quality, access controls, licensing, interdependencies, you name it.
From my perspective in IT post-merger integration, success in system integration comes down to preparation, planning, and communication.
It starts with technical due diligence. We must understand what systems are in place, how they’re configured, who owns them, and how they’re used. Without that upfront knowledge, you’re going to spend more time reacting than integrating.
I also believe in having a realistic integration plan with clear timelines, milestones, and expectations. Not all systems can (or should) be integrated in a single phase. Phased integration is often necessary, especially when dealing with business-critical or highly customized systems.
Equally important is user communication and support. Users need to know what’s changing, when it’s happening, and where to go for help. Even a technically perfect integration can create major disruption if users feel blindsided or unsupported.
