As countries adopt more protectionist policies and prioritize national interests, what you think how companies are rethinking their M&A strategies ?

This is a great question. I think we will start to see much more caution around cross-border deals to avoid political barriers – much of which will likely be motivated by a focus on strategic autonomy and supply chain control. Geopolitical risk mapping is also something that I’d expect to be a key part of target screening (if it isn’t already).

It seems like as protectionist policies rise, companies are rethinking M&A by focusing more on geopolitical risk, regulatory scrutiny, and flexible deal structures. Many are shifting toward “friendshoring” in aligned regions and favoring joint ventures or minority stakes over full takeovers. Contingency planning—like break-up clauses and regional carve-outs—is also becoming more common to navigate national security hurdles while pursuing growth.
